We often get asked if the Mazda 3 is a good car for towing. The sportier version of the family, the Mazda 3 Hatchback and its spicy sister, the Mazda 3 Sedan all have a limited towing capacity of 1200kg. But if you’re looking at taking either of these cars for a road trip and your back seats have passengers, then you may want the extra room towing provides for luggage.
Now if you upgrade to the Mazda CX-5, depending on the year, you may only get an extra 500kg towing capacity. If all you’re wanting to tow is a dinghy, then you’re fine. But if you’re wanting to take out a decent boat or caravan, this SUV is best left in the garage for the Mazda BT-50.
Don’t get us wrong. The Mazda range is elegant, and the Mazda 3’s extra cup holders and attention to safety make the driving experience in this car better than most. But you don’t want to spoil that by hauling a beast behind you that the Mazda 3 or Mazda 6 isn’t meant to handle.
