Do I need a Brake Controller?
You need a brake controller fitted when your trailer has electric or electric-over-hydraulic brakes fitted. Just having the brake system on the trailer isn’t enough – the tow vehicle needs an electric brake controller to activate it.
There are legal requirements for when electric brakes are required on a trailer:
- If your trailer’s Gross Trailer Mass (GTM) is over 2,000 kg, you’re legally required to have electric brakes on all wheels and a proportional brake controller installed.
- If the GTM is between 750 kg and 2,000 kg, one axle must be braked. Many installers recommend electric brakes with a brake controller for smoother and safer stopping.
